Couple at Abbey Delray tell their story of how they met

Bea & Cliff: Starting Over and Finding Companionship at Abbey Delray

Just when we think we have life all figured out, that’s often when the universe decides to throw out a curveball. This was certainly the case for Bea Buder and Cliff Bernstein, who moved into Abbey Delray alongside their respective spouses, both of whom were experiencing different health challenges.

Cliff’s wife passed away a mere six months after moving into Abbey Delray’s health center. Simultaneously, Bea also spent much of her time visiting her ailing spouse at the health center until he too passed away. Abbey Delray’s health center is where Cliff and Bea first met. They eventually started seeing each other more regularly.

Eight years later, their bond is stronger than ever.

“I enjoy his sense of humor, he’s a very funny man,” Bea said about her long-time partner.

If you thought her comment might end with a punchline, you were right.

“He’s not only funny, but funny looking,” Bea added while flashing a grin over at Cliff.

“Gee, thanks,” Cliff replied. It seemed like he might have heard that one before.

A Day in the Life of Bea & Cliff

“We’re together an awful lot,” Cliff shared. “We eat in the dining room every night together, we go out to eat once in a while, and we might take the bus [into town] to see a play or musical.”

The couple acknowledges they have a lot in common, including their passion for the arts, and they credit Abbey Delray for providing the ideal setting for their relationship to flourish.

“I’m very fortunate to have met someone like Bea,” Cliff said.

“We’re very fortunate to have met each other.” Bea added.

Giving Each Other A Little Space

While it would be easy to spend all of their time together, Cliff and Bea understand the importance of personal space in a relationship. That’s why they maintain separate apartments.

“I’m in building 9, he’s in building 3, and that’s the way he likes it,” Bea said, stealing another glance at Cliff. “That’s the way we decided to do it. We do see each other almost every day. We’re on the phone with each other every day. We’ve been very fortunate [in our situation].”

The couple attributes their thriving relationship to Abbey Delray, which fosters an atmosphere enriched by a variety of on-site services and amenities that simplify life.

“The activities are wonderful,” Bea said. “I can’t say that I’ve ever been bored here. And you can do as little or as much as you want and enjoy life here. And that’s the important thing … enjoying life at our age. And I [even] found somebody [here at Abbey Delray] to enjoy life with, too.”

“I feel the same way,” Cliff said while turning toward Bea. “Love you.”
